Becoming a new dad for the first time can be a daunting idea. Mothers seem to get all the help and advice they need but fathers are left to their own devices.
Pregnancy and child help books contain little or no advice for dads-to-be and this can lead to frustration, confusion and fear. For too long now dads have been pushed to the sidelines, but this has begun to change in recent years. New research and a better understanding of child development has brought a new focus on the role of dad in the rearing of a child.
But even this new understanding leaves dads struggling for a strategy to cope with the actual pregnancy and the time immediately before and after the birth of a child.
Here are some tips to follow to help you and the mother enjoy each other and the experience of becoming parents.
10 Tips for Dads
- The most important thing for an expecting dad is to be involved througout the pregnancy. This means going to the doctor with your partner, asking questions, getting a better understanding of what is going on biologically and emotionally.
- Understand you may experience moments where you feel excluded or ignored as attention is lavished upon the mom-to-be. This is to be expected as family and friends gush over the pending arrival of a cute baby. You are still important and still loved by family and friends.
- Read. Buy some baby books. Check books out of the library on pregnancy. Find as much information as possible. Not only does this help you understand some of the medical things going on, but the information will also ease some of the doubts and worries of caring for a new baby. And your new knowledge of pregnancy will impress your partner and maybe even some of your guy friends.
- Prepare a birth plan with your partner.
- Schedule baby and you time. This involves talking, reading and playing music to the baby through your partners belly. Research has shown these kinds of activities increases brain development and helps the baby recognize his or her's parent's voices earlier once born.
- Make a budget. Financial concerns are perhaps the greatest concern of soon-to-be dads. Having a budget in place eases those concerns.
- Help design the nursery and pick out items for the baby.
- Remember to spend time with your partner. Schedule a date night once a week. The ability to have time alone together is soon coming to an end— at least for awhile.
- Search for the perfect teddy bear for your new baby. This will be the first gift given to your new baby and will be a cherished toy for the rest of your child's life.
- Take a few deep breaths and enjoy this beautiful miracle called fatherhood.
